| About swaddling / baby wrapping
Mothers throughout history have soothed tired, crying or unsettled newborns by 'swaddling'. Today, most midwives swaddle infants soon after birth and it is now a standard newborn care practice in many hospitals. Swaddling involves wrapping your baby snugly in a 'Swaddling Cloth' to restrict limb movement. (Swaddling Cloths are known as 'receiving blankets' in the United States.) Most babies love being wrapped. It mimics their pre-birth experience making them comfortable and content. Swaddling also helps settle baby's developing nervous system. Newborns can be overwhelmed and upset by all their new nerve feelings. Swaddling places their muscle and joint position sensors at rest. This settles a newborn disturbed by jerking leg and arm movements (startle reflex) caused as nerves and muscles develop. In 1983, Australian company KiwiGreen developed a Swaddling Cloth range using the softest 100% cotton muslin available to keep modern swaddled babies comfortable and content. KiwiGreen muslin is now universally recognised as the ideal fabric for swaddling today's babies. It is widely recommended by parents, carers and professionals alike. Many hospitals and educators choose KiwiGreen swaddling cloths to demonstrate wrapping in their anti-natal classes. |

All natural softness - you can feel the KiwiGreen difference Cotton is a strong, natural and absorbent fibre that breathes easily and feels comfortable against baby's body. KiwiGreen uses a double layer of muslin in each wrap for extra softness and support. Super soft and lightweight KiwiGreen muslin is ideal for use all year round, providing baby with all the comfort and softness he or she deserves. It has good thermal properties. Studies show that the fibres and open weave of muslin help babies naturally adjust their body temperature. Most importantly, this helps prevent overheating, keeping baby comfortable and content while wrapped. It is important to note today's modern muslin Swaddling Cloth is designed foremost to satisfy baby's needs of comfort and security, not warmth. While muslin Swaddling Cloths are particularly good in hot weather, when cold it may necessary to spread a bunny rug or woollen blanket over the muslin-wrapped baby.
Swaddling in muslin also gives you more confidence in handling a newborn, as they are easier to hold. Baby's bonding and feeling of well being is enhanced as your warmth and heartbeat can still be felt through muslin. |
To wrap your baby, fold the Swaddling Cloth into a triangle. This puts the fabric onto the bias for more flexibility. Place baby into the centre of the triangle, with the point near baby's feet. Wrap securely, folding one side over and underneath the baby, then the other side. Fold up the bottom if so desired. Each baby has a unique personality and different needs and wants. You will soon get to know how securely your baby likes to be wrapped. Choosing the right size Swaddling Cloth helps make wrapping your baby easier. KiwiGreen caters for newborns through our BeanieWeanie 90x90cm range of muslin Swaddling Cloths. Extra large BubbyBoo 90x130cm Swaddling Cloths suit bigger babies better. KiwiGreen muslin Swaddling Cloths are easy care. They are always fresh and clean after washing as cotton releases soil easily. Muslin naturally becomes softer with repeated washing and use. Hand wash, or simply machine wash in a lingerie bag. The cloths are easily sanitised if needed. Muslin is quick drying and soon ready to use again and again. Cotton products are also resistant to pilling and free from static cling. A big bonus is versatility. KiwiGreen muslin Swaddling Cloths make ideal soft baby towels and can be used for many other practical nursery and 'out and about with bub' applications. One last, but important advantage - all KiwiGreen Swaddling Cloths are of Australian made quality with a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
